Artist Profiles-Ty and Marcia Schultz

In the first of our Artist profiles, PaverpolIsrael interviewed Ty and Marcia Schultz about their work with Paverpol.

d

Ty and Marcia Schultz attended two years of art school followed by four years at the Emily Carr School of Art and Design in Vancouver BC. After leaving Art School they turned their expertise into a business, Creative Props, Inc, making props for the movie industry.  Their attention to detail and realism is evident in their work today.

Ty & Marcia's classes in the US and Canada tend toward introducing new materials and techniques previously unavailable or unfamiliar to artists. They believe that by expanding the vocabulary of these materials and language they can open up new vistas for the artist. Ty and Marcia, with over 20 years experience making realistic props at a time before computer generated images I presume you have used a range of materials.  What excites you about Paverpol and how do you feel it adds to your work?

I love the fact that you can take any natural fibre or fabric and make a piece of sculpture. You don’t have to use clay, metal, wood or other more difficult material but with any natural, organic material you can drape, fold, gather and you have piece of art!!

I love the way you combine a sense of humor with realism.  Where do you feel you get your inspiration and ideas from?

A good question…I have a nursing background so biology comes naturally to me, and Ty has always been interested in science fiction so we have found collaborating and creating these fantasy birds is a combination of ideas.

My personal favorites are your birdz.  What is your favorite piece you have made?

My favorite pieces are also the big birdz. We taught the class in Hampton, Va in the U.S. and the fantasy birds that the students came up with were fantastic.  I also like the Crow Class because crows are dear to my heart. They are so smart but such little thieves that they are very interesting.

Can you give any tips to an artist starting out with Paverpol?

Feel free to use many kinds of material…Even if it isn’t natural…try it! Make different objects…Try jewelry, hats, art pieces, dolls, go wild and try everything!!
